…with a bunch of frills in a church house and a plated dinner reception complete with live orchestra or band?
Dragonfly’s comment on “Shaking My Head” led me to this question. Can any married person or single person desiring a church wedding please explain to me the purpose and/or joy of getting married with all the bells and whistles? I’m sincerely trying to make peace with this.
Also, for those familiar with the Bridezilla phenom, what are some ways women can avoid it? I have some ideas, but let me hear from you.
i guess the appeal of all the frills is simply the desire to “go all out” and do things you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to do, since your wedding is probably going to be the biggest event of your life (other than childbearing, but the celebrations are totally different).
the problem is, people don’t tend to see beyond “that day.” seriously, you spend months and months (for some, years) coordinating, spending, hiring, planning, decorating, finalizing, stressing, yelling, shopping, fancifying…aaaaaaaand…the ceremony is over in like 20 minutes. all that…for…20…minutes.
the reception is where a lot of the planning and money go, but even that is over in a couple of hours. then you’re left with bills for years.
the picture you have posted up here is not even slightly appealing to me. i’m just not that kind of “fancy feast” girl. i mean, i’m certainly not a McDonald’s chick, but i’m nowhere near the $200-a-plate chick either. ain’t a debutante bone in my bod. i don’t need 5 different size forks and spoons to eat my dinner. give me ONE fork and ONE spoon and ONE knife. they can multitask.
if i’m hosting something, my greatest concern is that EVERYONE be comfortable and have fun!! just let your hair down! all the frillies add pretension and stiffness. but that’s just me. one can have a gorgeous ceremony and reception without a lot of the hooplah.
LOL @ the bold. Heee-larious!!! I’ve attended one wedding with little hooplah, and the bride was really low key. She reminds me a lot of you, and everyone, even the children, really had fun. I hope, when given the opportunity, I can do that.

i’m saying…why can’t i use the same fork for my salad and my entree? that is a waste of utensils!
With all this going green business, it will actually save on dishwashing too. I think you’re on to something a lot less pretentious than the status quo. When my mom made me learn all that different silverware, I thought the exact same thing you just said. What a waste!
